The Division of Avian Conservation is conducting migration route studies and population monitoring through the nationwide "bird banding" project commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment. As the bird banding center in Japan, the institute provides trainings for banders, analyzes data and exchanges banding information with centers worldwide.

There are 60 bird banding stations designated by the Ministry of the Environment nationwide

Recent projects include satellite tracking of swans, geese, cranes, etc, and conservation research of the Short-tailed Albatross in Torishima Island. Furthermore various activities such as workshops are organized for exchanging information with foreign countries in order to enhance bird banding efforts throughout the Asia region.
